Before potential pilots can begin flying, they must go through an intensive overview of aviation basics. Introductory Private Pilot courses teach the fundamentals of aerodynamics, airplane engine systems, flight instruments and Federal Avia-tion Administration (FAA) regulations. Students watch test footage and learn the basic operating procedures for light sport aircrafts. This course is also used as preparation for the FAA Light Sport Pilot examination. Private Pilot courses at the introductory level usually do not have any prerequisites, though they are required for every proceeding Private Pilot course.

Private Pilot courses at the advanced level involve direct flight training. Students will go up in a small craft with an instructor, at first observing and then later practicing with controls and learning the basics of take-offs and landings. A minimum of 40 hours of flight training is required for the completion of the course, along with additional safety training as specified by the FAA. Private Pilot courses in flight training generally end with the student applying for a FAA private pilot airplane license.
